| Two neat things |
[Sep. 17th, 2007|11:47 am] |
One of my favorite radio shows to listen to is The Lazy Environmentalist on Lime Radio. Today, they were talking about two really neat things.
First, was RecycleBank. It is this awesome private company that does city recycling. The weight of how much each household recycles is recorded when picked up each week, and then converted into reward points that can be redeemed at various local and national businesses. It is like getting them money for taking cans in for recycling, but it is all curbside. For those of you who don't have curbside recycling in your area (like me) you can go to http://www.recyclebank.com/register.cfm to let RecycleBank know that you would like their service in your city.
Second is GoodSearch. This is a Yahoo based search engine that gives $0.01 to a charity of your choice, for each search you do through their site. An effortless way to give on a small scale. |

I get to present some of my resent research at a conference (Southeastern-Atlantic Regional Conference on Differential Equations). Yey! |

| On my way to orals |
[Aug. 26th, 2007|06:37 pm] |
On Thursday I found out that I passed my second prelim and passed the other test I took this summer to fulfill a PhD analysis requirement. Woohoo! Now I get to prepare for my oral examination in May in which I get to defend my thesis proposal. The end is in sight.
I also found out on Thursday that my adviser has a journal in mind for the paper I have been working on over the summer. It will be published in special issue of the journal some time early next year. It will be my first publication in which I am first author.
I am starting to feel like a real mathematician now. |

| My sweet new laptop |
[Aug. 21st, 2007|04:09 pm] |
I am so in love with my new laptop, especially since I have finally installed everything I need to be organized and do research. It has a tablet feature so I can take notes on it. And it is super super fast ... well compared to my old laptop I am sure just about anything would be faster.
happy happy me *sigh* |

One of my classes for next semester got moved from its usual time, and I just found out that I only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and my earliest class starts at 11:00 am. So very nice! I can actually go home for Thanksgiving and stay for more than 3 days. Woohoo! |

| Sicko |
[Jul. 21st, 2007|12:49 am] |
|
Bryan and I just saw Sicko, the latest documentary from Michael Moore. I highly recommend seeing it. I enjoyed it, but was shocked and horrified at the same time. I wonder how many people in the country have died because a hospital refused to treat them after their insurance company refused to pay the costs? Sad ... truely sad. I know there are a lot of Americans who are doing great things for people, but at times it really feels like America's humanity is slipping away. |

| Engaged |
[Jul. 3rd, 2007|05:28 pm] |
|
Bryan and I got engaged while on vacation in Destin, Florida. We are planning a destination wedding in Montezuma, Costa Rica. So excited! Yey! Since we clearly cannot invite everyone to Costa Rica we will be having two receptions: one in Los Angeles and one in Mt Juliet. |

| Last day of classes |
[Apr. 28th, 2007|09:03 am] |
Yesterday was the last day of classes. I just need to finish a take-home final, a project, take an in-class final, and then give a final to the class I teach. And then ... I'm on my way to CA. I will get there in time for Mother's Day, which will be nice.
In other news ... I've been funded to do research over the summer. I have one project (an optimal control model for species augmentation) that is mostly written up that I will be submitting for publication once summer starts. Then for the remainder of the summer I plan on working on a discretized version of the model and submitting that for publication as well. It's exciting to be publishing again.
In addition to doing research this summer, I have to study for another prelim examination (the Math Ecology prelim). I am thinking it won't be as bad this time around now that I have already passed one.
One last little bit of excitement on the horizon. For the summer research I am doing, I get paid extra money (in addition to my yearly stipend). With some of that extra money, I plan on finally buying a digital SLR that I have been drooling over for quit some time: the Nikon D50. I expect to be quite camera happy in a month or two when I finally get the camera.
Thats all for now. |

| Remember Tink |
[Feb. 27th, 2007|10:36 pm] |
|
My little tiny Tink, the smallest and nuttiest of my four cats is dead. I came home today to find her lying on the side of the road. Mostly likely she was hit by a car. She was so small (the runt of her litter) and only 8 months old. She brought great joy to my life with her zanny mischeviousness. I loved her dearly and will miss her greatly. |

| Optimal Control |
[Feb. 22nd, 2007|01:03 pm] |

I am totally loving optimal control. It is, by far, the most interesting topic I am studying this year. Look forward to some optimal control research from me in the future. |

I forgot to post this a while ago, but I passed my PDEs prelim that I took on Jan 4th. Woohoo! |

I finally found a use for the sleep kitties who lay all over my paperwork ... I am currently using Tink to hold my Math Ecology book open. This book is notorious for closing itself and losing your place. Ah, the utility of cats! |

| | tired | ] | I half-ass updated my images of the month. I haven't updated it since April. So, now there are pictures for May, June and July up there. I have some pictures I want to put up for the months since, but it requires more work and I am tired. Check ou the photos that are up though.

Also, I created a site for myself on the math space at UT. If you want to see that is at
http://www.math.utk.edu/~bodine
There isn't much there. It will mostly be there as a resource for the class I am teaching next semester.
Anyhow ... that's all! |

| Update |
[Sep. 17th, 2006|10:20 pm] |
Sorry if I haven't been responding to things lately.
Between failing my prelim, starting back up with school (including teaching + research), having my car totalled (not my fault, I was rear ended while stopped, don't worry, I'm not hurt), and trying to not go crazy because of it all, I haven't found much time to keep up with MySpace or LiveJournal.
If there is something important that you would like me to know about, please email me.

| Interesting Blog: Not a Blog |
[Aug. 15th, 2006|11:33 am] |
When I had more time (read, before I started grad school) I loved reading through political, environmental, and regilous commentary blogs. They kept me inspired that there are still people who care, who haven't grown complacent.
While checking in on the status of the latest (yet to be published) book in a series I am reading ( Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin) I stumbled onto his blog. At first I thought it would just be about his books and such, but his lastest posts were all political commentary which I very much enjoyed reading. I'm sure it helps that he is a very eloquent writer. If you want to read some interesting commentary on the gradual loss of freedom, I would suggest checking out the blog Not a Blog at http://grrm.livejournal.com.
A totally non-sequitar sidenote: The sickness is setting in. My body has entered post test mode where I am forced to relax and take it easy due to the massive sinus pressure in my face. |
